Overview of the Parish

The villages of Lindale, and Low and High Newton are historically within the Parish of Lindale and Newton in Cartmel formerly Allithwaite Upper with a population of 824 according to the 2001 census.

Lindale village is set to the north of Grange-over-Sands on a hill overlooking Morecambe Bay.  Situated close to the A590 and near the River Winster, this small village offers easy access to the Lake District National Park. To the north, lie the villages of Low and High Newton, now by-passed by the busy A590 road to Barrow-in-Furness.

Traditionally a farming community, the Parish’s proximity to the A590 road has seen a growth in the number of commuters who live here. It is also a centre for car distributors. The local tourist boom has largely missed Lindale and Low and High Newton, with nearby Grange-over-Sands developing into a seaside resort and villages to the north and west, such as Windermere, benefitting from their position in the Lake District National Park.

Lindale village has a thriving primary school,  pub, village shop and  post office.  High Newton no longer has a school or shop but has a pub in the centre and the school is now used as the village hall.
